Three prominent Republican senators are facing primary challenges from more conservative members of the GOP. While the challenges faced by two of these senators are not considered serious, Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana faces a tough battle.

Known as a moderate senator who is a friend of President Obama, Lugar has been accused of not taking a strong enough stand against the president’s policies by his primary opponent, Indiana State Treasurer Richard Mourdock. Washington Post columnist George Will outlined the primary battle in a recent opinion article saying, “Lugar’s courtliness and Midwestern aversion to rhetorical flamboyance do not match this moment of fevered politics.” If Senator Lugar is defeated in his primary, does this signal the end of the moderate Republican?
