FAQs

Q: What kinds of pieces does the Journal publish?

A: The journal publishes shorter op-ed style pieces related to public policy. Most of the pieces focus on a current policy issue and argue for a certain solution; e.g., arguing for a bill to pass through Congress, advocating for a policy approach to a current problem, describing certain policies adopted by different government entities or organizations, or explaining the repercussions from a current event. Pieces can also take a more reflective approach on a policy topic or policy experience. These pieces may include a second year MPP reflecting on their summer internship, reflections on a political TV show from the viewpoint of a policy student, or a reflections on studying at Sanford.

We encourage students to submit pieces that they have written for class or ones that they have written on their own. Many students at Sanford will have to write a op-ed or similar style piece in their class. With some slight editing these class assignments can make great additions to the Journal.

Q: Is there a word limit?

A: The Journal does not have a work count limit, although a common industry size is 750 words. We will not reject a piece solely for being slightly over or under 750 words, but we encourage you to keep it in that neighborhood.

Q: What format do you want for articles?

A: Please submit in a Word document. The piece should contain a title, the author’s name and a suggestions for a tweet/other social media posts.

Q: What if I have an idea, but my piece isn’t fully finished?

A: We prefer submissions to be fully completed. But if you would like assistance in the brainstorming or drafting process please reach out to us!

Q: What are the details of the submission process?

A: First, upload your document via the link above. The editors will receive it and begin two rounds of editing. The first reading will be done by at least one co-editor-in-chief, while the second read will be another member of the Journal’s executive team or a guest editor. Your edited piece will be returned to you within ten days.

At that point, make any additional edits you feel are necessary. When you complete your edits, email the piece back and please include the following items:

  • Picture to be used as a thumbnail on our website. (Ensure you own it, or that you include citation information.)

  • Any tags for your piece (such as policy areas, health, education…)

  • Social media posts (if not included earlier)

Once we receive your piece and the above information it will be published on our website. We will also work to promote your piece on Twitter and through other communication channels.

Q: Do I own the rights to my article if it’s published here?

A: Yes, you reserve all the rights to the content.

We look forward to reading your pieces. If you have any questions please visit the contact us page of the website.
